In 1447, the assets of a hospital located in Navelli were incorporated into the larger hospital of San Salvatore in Aquila, built at the behest of St. John of Capestrano. The land register of Navelli, from the end of the 15th century, still mentions this spitale ('hospital'), a place of shelter for wayfarers and pilgrims who travelled along the plateau and who had to stop for the night in this structure, as well as refresh themselves, before resuming their journey. Attached to the hospital was the Church of St Jerome, a medical saint, which was restored in December 2011. The area is still remembered today by the toponym la cròcë dë ru spëdàlë, where 'cross' means 'crossroads', 'crossroads'.
